Network Printer Setup

Instructions for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

When adding a Chemistry network printer, the first step is to find the necessary information for the desired printer. When connected within the Chemistry network, all network printer information can be found at http://printqueue.chem.byu.edu:631/. Below is a sample entry from that page, and the printer we will be installing. Note that the queue name is highlighted in blue and the printer model is next to it in the darker bar.

To add the printer to your list, open the program found at Applications > Utilities > Printer Setup Utility. When the Printer List window appears, click "Add" in the toolbar (shown below). This can also be accomplished from the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences by clicking on the plus sign.

You will then be presented with the following window. Make sure that IP Printer is selected, and LPD/LPR is the selected protocol. Fill in the address (which is the same for all Chemistry network printers) and queue name, depending on the printer you wish to add.

The Name and Location fields are optional, but help in identifying the printer. If these fields are left blank, the default values will be used, and you'll end up with a printer named "C200_XEROX_on_printqueue.chem.byu.edu".

Be sure to select the correct make and model of printer. This will allow you to use printer-specific features and will make sure your documents look right when they print.

If you experience any difficulties adding your printer, please contact the Chemistry CSR office at 422-5771 or csrs@chem.byu.edu.
