BYU-created mini tool has massive potential

BYU researchers have created a miniaturized, portable version of a tool now capable of analyzing Mars’ atmosphere — and that’s just one of its myriad possible uses.

The inaugural BYU Chemistry Camp was a fun-filled three-day event for campers ages 9-12 who participated in hands-on, inquiry-based chemistry experiments. Crash Testing Bacteria: BYU Chemistry Professor Daniel Austin and His Graduate Students Try to Find Fatal Limit

The research group, funded by NASA, is studying high velocity impact of bacterial spores. More specifically, the group is trying to find the speed limit above which bacteria won’t survive when they crash into a hard surface. And the best part? There is a video!

Student Research on Preterm Birth Wins First Prize

Suresh Kumar, a chemistry PhD candidate from New Delhi, India, won first place for his poster at the 39th International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography (ISCC) last week.

Research Pays Off at ACS National Meeting

Of around 140 physical chemistry students in a poster session at the ACS (American Chemical Society) National Meeting in Denver last week, only a handful were chosen to receive awards for their research.  One of these few was BYU’s own Conner Harper, who graduated with his BS in chemistry this last December.

Harvesting Solar Energy

Chemistry graduate student Trevor Smith grows nanocrystals to capture the energy in sunlight. Smith is the second author of a paper published in the journal Nanotechnology. He and first first author Stephen Erickson, a physics student, work with professors Richard Watt and John Colton.
