Toroidal Ion Trap

The toroidal ion trap has increased ion capacity like the linear ion trap (LIT) but is still traps ions in three dimensions similar to the quadrupole ion trap (QIT). We use a design that simplifies the electrode shapes by using cylindrical and planar electrodes similar to the cylindrical ion trap (CIT). We have a miniature trap and vacuum system for this design and will testits capabilities in order for it to be used in portable mass spectrometey.
Because of the geometry of the toroidal ion trap, the theory used for other types of ion traps cannot be used for this new design. We are exploring trapping ions in potential distributions based off of harmonics in a toroidal coordinate system and determining how these harmonics can be used for mass analysis.
