The inaugural BYU Chemistry Camp was a fun-filled three-day event for campers ages 9-12 who participated in hands-on, inquiry-based chemistry experiments. Campers came from all local Provo schools (Franklin, Provo Peaks, Timpanogos, and Wasatch) and from as far away as Alaska and Tennessee.The idea for the camp was sparked by Dr. Ess who was looking for a science camp for his 10-year old daughter to attend this summer. At the Pittcon 2016 oral symposium, held in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 7, Dr. Milton L. Lee was honored with the 2016 LCGC Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography Award. The 2015 Homecoming Alumni and Fall Social for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was held Friday, October 9, in the Benson Science Building. Dr. J. Bevan Ott passed away March 27, 2015. Ott received his bachelor’s degree from BYU and later returned to teach physical chemistry. He mentored many BYU professors, current and emeritus, including Adam Woolley and Brian Woodfield.
Ott spent several years at BYU as the Chemistry Department Chair and also served as BYU’s associate academic vice president over research.

James Rex Goates, former professor in the BYU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and former dean of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, passed away Friday, November 28. He was 94 years old.

On November 13, 2014, Dr. Dearden was presented with the Reed M. Izatt & James J. Christensen Faculty Excellence in Research Award. After receiving the award, he presented a lecture titled "Supramolecular Chemistry in the Gas Phase."
