2012 Department Retreat

The faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry enjoyed a retreat at Timp Lodge on June 28.  The day started with the department administration cooking and serving pancakes to everyone.   The mountain air seemed to improve appetites and a lot of pancakes were consumed.  After breakfast, faculty and staff met to hear Dr. James Faulconer, philosophy professor, talk on the subject, “Faith and Stuff:  Being an LDS Scholar/Scientist.”  Then after a ...

With the ability to define the makeup of molecules and determine the mass of miniscule particles, mass spectrometers are particularly useful instruments. NASA hopes to more fully take advantage of these machines by expanding the mass spectrometer’s area of operation — all the way to Mars.

Professor Investigates Stabilization of Protein-based Medications

This year, an estimated 8,880 Utah residents will be diagnosed with cancer, according to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. When you include friends and loved ones of patients, the number of individuals affected by cancer is much larger. The research of Professor Josh Price, of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is aimed at reducing that impact by enhancing the effectiveness of pharmaceutical drugs like those used to treat breast cancer and glaucoma.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry gathered together on Wednesday, April 4, to spend an evening in celebration of the outstanding accomplishments of its students over the past year.

Faculty and Staff Members Recognized for Their Service and Teaching

John Lamb, Robert Paxman and Kim Christensen were recently recognized for their excellent work and service at the annual CPMS banquet on Thursday, January 19.

Scott Sommerfeldt, the dean of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, announced fourteen recipients of different awards for service, citizenship and teaching.

Dr. Lamb was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award (10+ years). Sommerfeldt called special attention to his application of software tools and focus on student interaction.

NMR Lab Helps Students Understand Molecular Structures

Who knew that BYU students had access to magnetic forces 220,000 times stronger than the magnetic field of the earth?                                                                        

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry allows undergraduate and graduate students to identify and analyze the shape of molecules.

Not Just for Looks: New Gold Mirrors Aid Investigation of Chemical Separations

Take a paper towel and dip the edge into water that is laced with colored dye. As the thin fibers of the towel soak up the mixture, the water and the dye separate — the further from the original point of saturation, the darker the color.

This basic experiment illustrates the process of chemical separation. Chemists use similar, albeit more complicated, procedures to analyze chemicals.
