Y-Chem a Hit at Annual Department Picnic

The usual mix of new and old faces appeared at the annual department picnic in Rock Canyon’s Park Area on Septempter 4, 2012, to socialize, eat and play. This year’s after-dinner activities may have been the best yet- a chemical magic show put on by two members of the Y-Chem Society that mesmerized the younger faces in the audience.

2012 Department Retreat

The faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry enjoyed a retreat at Timp Lodge on June 28.  The day started with the department administration cooking and serving pancakes to everyone.   The mountain air seemed to improve appetites and a lot of pancakes were consumed.  After breakfast, faculty and staff met to hear Dr. James Faulconer, philosophy professor, talk on the subject, “Faith and Stuff:  Being an LDS Scholar/Scientist.”  Then after a ...

Faculty and Staff Members Recognized for Their Service and Teaching

John Lamb, Robert Paxman and Kim Christensen were recently recognized for their excellent work and service at the annual CPMS banquet on Thursday, January 19.

Scott Sommerfeldt, the dean of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, announced fourteen recipients of different awards for service, citizenship and teaching.

Dr. Lamb was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award (10+ years). Sommerfeldt called special attention to his application of software tools and focus on student interaction.

Department alumni, emeritus professors and current professors gathered in the rotunda of the Benson Science Building on Friday, October 7, for an enjoyable evening talking with old friends and making new ones.

Dr. Greg Burton, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, welcomed the guests and thanked them for their support in “continuing the tradition” of excellence. Dr. Burton also announced the 2011 Distinguished Pillar Award recipient, J. Bevan Ott, a physical chemist.

Lots of Fun and Food at Annual Department Picnic

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry kicked off the new school year with fun and food at the annual department picnic held in Rock Canyon on Saturday, September 10.

The event was well attended with a large group of graduate students, faculty, staff and their families. Former students and colleagues attending a symposium in honor of Dr. Milton Lee, which took place this weekend, were also invited.

Department Staff Members Receive University Awards

President Cecil O. Samuelson paid tribute to all BYU faculty and staff members in the Marriott Center Tuesday morning (Aug. 23), and announced the 2011 recipients of numerous university honors, including six people from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Staff members Wayne J. Anderson and Linda Richards were two of those recognized by President Samuelson.

Emeritus Professors Honored at Alumni Dinner October 8

About 90 emeritus faculty, current faculty, alumni and their families arrived at the Benson Building Friday evening for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s annual alumni homecoming dinner and program.

The dinner was a delicious buffet from BYU Catering. The room buzzed with talk and laughter as old friends caught up on one another’s lives and others made new friends among the attendees.
