Scholarships

The BYU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry receives generous aid from alumni and other donors that provides scholarship and research funding opportunities for our students.

Department Scholarships

Department Scholarship Application

Applications for 2026-2027 will be open from March 1st - March 31st, 2026.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry awards tuition scholarships to department majors. They are only available to sophomore, junior, and senior students. 

Department scholarships pay tuition for only fall and winter semesters.

College Scholarships

The application period for 2025-2026 scholarships from the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences is now open through February 28, 2026.

An email from the College will be sent to all undergraduate students with a declared major in the college. The information below is included in that email. Please feel free to disseminate this message to students and faculty. We are working on digital signage that I will pass on as soon as I get it. Create your own digital signage if you like. The links below will also be on the college website.

All continuing students in the college for the academic year 2026-2027 are encouraged to apply using this link here

It is helpful to review the available scholarships before beginning the application. It is also helpful to gather the information below before beginning the application:

Financial need scholarships will require a short (250 words) letter of application/essay describing how you meet the criteria for financial need. 

Your application for specialty scholarships will also require a short (150 words) letter of application/essay describing how you meet the criteria for those particular awards. 

Financial Need Scholarships
For students pursuing a degree in the college of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical sciences who have greater financial need.

  • Ronald K. Ririe Scholarship

Specialty Scholarships

  • Doyle C. and Sandra J. Udy Scholarship: For undergraduate students in the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences who are committed to completing their education and who will abide by the honor code. Required minimum 3.0 GPA. Provide a statement explaining your commitment to the Honor Code and how it influences your life. Recipients of this award are encouraged to maintain the spirit of giving by contributing to this scholarship as their future abilities permit.
  • Robert E. and Sherryl S. Nord Scholarship: For undergraduate students in their junior or senior year of study who are pursuing a course of study that will lead to a baccalaureate degree in any of the physical science majors (Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics) offered by the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences. Required minimum 3.5 GPA during two academic years preceding the award. Candidates should provide a statement describing their intention to pursue graduate professional degree after completing their baccalaureate degree (i.e. Juris Doctor, Master of Business Administration, and others). Preference for students who will pursue graduate degree at another university or college.
  • Grant A. Young Scholarship: For undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in the biological or physical sciences (Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics) and who have evidenced scholastic ability by maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA. Provide a statement describing your study and your life circumstances. Recipients of this award are encouraged to maintain the spirit of giving by contributing to this fund at some future date should their circumstances allow.
  • Jessie Allen Werner Scholarship: For students who are pursuing a degree in the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences and maintained at minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students whose course of study emphasizes the interface between bioscience and any area of the physical, mathematical, and/or computational sciences. Preference may also be given to students who have a relatively greater financial need. Provide a statement describing your study, life circumstances, and financial need. Recipients of this award are encouraged to maintain the spirit of giving by contributing to this fund at some future date should their circumstances allow.
  • B. John Garrick Scholarship: For students who are pursuing a degree in physics, engineering, or the earth sciences with emphasis on risk-informed studies relating to energy or the environment and who have evidenced scholastic ability by maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA. Provide a statement describing your course of study and its relation to risk-informed studies, energy, or the environment.
  • Elva Clara Wunderli Richarson Memorial Scholarship: For undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences. The focus of the students receiving the awards should be in the following areas: Multilingual AI Translation/Natural Language Processing, including applications of artificial intelligence in these areas. Provide a statement describing your course of study.

The college committee will make decisions in March (after the SRC) and let you know which students will be receiving awards.
