Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) are granted to promote undergraduate research and experience in the lab.
General Information
There are two types of URAs:
New URA - Applications can be submitted and accepted anytime during the semester.
Students must have approval from their faculty advisor before applying.
Renewal URA - Applications must be completed by the application deadline. Late submissions will not be considered.
A URA submission must be submitted for each semester a student intends to work in the lab.
Submissions will be opened prior to Fall, Winter and Spring semesters.
Concurrent enrollment in a chemistry research course is required.
This course must be registered for at the time of application.

Submission Instructions
- New URAs
- Complete a one-page proposal and a one-page mentoring plan.
- Register for a chemistry research course
- Complete the URA Submission Form and proposal upload for Winter 2024
- If applying mid-semester, email the URA administrator at coffice@chem.byu.edu to inform them of your submission.
New URA Proposal/Mentoring Template
- Renewal URAs
- Complete a one-page proposal and a one-page mentoring plan.
- Complete a progress report at mentoring.byu.edu. Progress reports are located under "My Reports" on the dashboard.
- Register for a chemistry research course
- Complete the URA Submission Form and proposal upload for Winter 2024
- Watch for an email from the University towards the end of the semester to complete their experiential learning survey. You will not be able to continue as a URA if you do not complete the survey.

Concurrent Enrollment
All students must be concurrently enrolled in a research course in order to receive a URA. Research course options include CHEM 297R*, CHEM 497R*, and CHEM 498R. Discuss with your lab advisor which course is appropriate for you.
*Full semester sections are even numbers, second block only sections are odd numbers
- CHEM 297R is intended for students who are new to a research lab. This course is .5 credit hours and graded on a pass/fail basis.
- CHEM 497R is for students continuing work in a research lab. This course is 1 credit hour and graded on a pass/fail basis.
- CHEM 498R is a research capstone course that requires an extensive research paper. This course is a variable credit course with a letter grade.
